If
you have to choose between receiving $ 1 and $ 10, which one will you pick? If
you have to choose between receiving 1 car and 2 cars, which one will you pick?
If you ask me the same questions, then without any doubt I will pick the one
which is bigger in value or bigger in number, $ 10 and 2 cars. As long it is
free...^ ^
It
is our nature to value things, this one is bigger, that one is cuter, this one
is better. Is it wrong? Of course, not, for it is also God’s nature. But, what
is the difference between our judgement and His? It is that He doesn’t value
things only based on the seen factors, but also from the unseen factors.
An
offering from a poor widow gives us an image that in fact, God is paying
attention to people when they give their offerings. He noticed when some rich
people gave in a large amount of money to the treasury. Do you think He was
unpleased by their offerings? I think He did appreciate those sacrifices. But
when He saw a poor widow put in two small cooper coins to the chest, He saw
something more than just coins, He saw a life was also offered with the coins.
Jesus
knew that the penny is her life – all she had to live on. “All she had” means
that the woman might not have any money to buy things (daily needs) for
herself, or it was the only last treasure she had to give away to God. The
certain point is, without worrying about her future life, the woman was totally
surrender to God, she gave her life to God.
Our
money is part o our life, or maybe, it is our life. When we give it to God, we
are tearing some of the life apart and giving it away with the money as an
offering. When we give, we feel hurt, pain, our heart’s in pain, because the
money is very important for us. Do you know that, that kind of offering, is the
kind of offering God wants from us.
He
doesn’t need our money because He is the owner of everything. All that He wants
now is our life. An obedient life. A surrendered life. This is our offering,
this is our faith.
Dear
Father in heaven, thank you. Forgive me for always worrying about myself. I
want to learn to give this life to You, to give something that “hurts” my
heart. I want to believe in Your care. Father, accept my offering, accept my
life. Amen.
... I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put
more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth;
but she, out of her poverty, put in everything–all she had to live on.
Mark. 12:43-44
